Why Is My Electric Bill So High in Southwest Florida?
AC, rate increases, and how you use power all drive Southwest Florida electric bills. Here's what's really behind the number — and what you can actually control.

Short answer: In Southwest Florida, air conditioning is usually the single biggest driver — our heat and humidity run it hard. On top of that, utility rates have climbed, and how you use power (pool pumps, EV charging, daytime usage) shapes the total. Some of that you can't control; some of it you can.
The big one: air conditioning
In our climate, cooling is the dominant load in most homes. Long cooling seasons, humidity, and older or oversized AC systems all push consumption up. That's why efficiency and HVAC often move the needle more than anything else.
Rates have gone up
Utility rates aren't standing still. FPL's typical 1,000 kWh residential bill is about $136.64 under January 2026 rates, following a four-year settlement the Florida PSC approved in November 2025. LCEC customers pay around $147 at 1,000 kWh, with most bill movement coming through its monthly power cost adjustment. Bills have risen meaningfully over recent years — commonly cited as roughly 40–45% since 2020, though that figure is sensitive to an unusually low 2020 base year.
How you use power matters
Pool pumps, electric vehicle charging, multiple AC systems, well pumps, and heavy daytime usage all add up. The shape of your usage — when and how you consume — also affects how much solar could offset if you went that route.
The one thing you fully control is whether you keep buying every kilowatt-hour from the utility at whatever the rate becomes. That's the question worth exploring.
Questions worth asking
- How old and how efficient is my AC system?
- What's my highest-usage tier or season?
- Would reducing usage change what system I'd need?
